Bible Hero of the Week - Miriam

You can find this story in the Bible in the book of Exodus, chapter 2 The book of Exodus opens with the news that Joseph and his brothers all died in Egypt and were replaced with a very fruitful Israelite nation.  So much so that the new Pharaoh worried that they would take over his kingdom.  He had a dramatic solution - kill all the boy babies born to Israelite women.

Now a certain woman had a son and did not want him killed.  So she built a little boat for him and hid him in it among the reeds at the bank of the Nile river.  She left the baby’s older sister, Miriam, to see what might happen.

You probably remember the rest of the story.  Pharaoh’s daughter came along and saw the basket with the baby in it.  Miriam ran up to her and asked if she wanted a wet nurse for the baby.  Of course Miriam brought her own mother to Pharaoh’s daughter.  Pharaoh’s daughter named the baby “Moses.”.

We see God at work in this story, preparing Moses for his career as the leader of Israel.  He took advantage of Miriam’s quick thinking and courage to save Moses from certain death.
What does this mean to me?   Moses is the one who gets the credit for leading his people out of slavery in Egypt.  But he would not have lived past babyhood without help from Miriam.  Sometimes God wants us to help someone else to greatness instead of giving us praise from men.
